ORTHODONTICS FOR CHILDREN

Every child should see an orthodontist like Dr. Balabegian at age seven to see if they need Phase I treatment. Most children don’t, but it’s important that the few who do need treatment get seen at an early age to intercept certain issues.

Children are ideal candidates for orthodontic treatment, because they're still growing and we can use that to our advantage when correcting certain orthodontic problems. Issues like crossbites, impacted teeth, and harmful oral habits can be identified early and should be treated early to help aid remaining permanent teeth erupt into a better position.

Two-Phase Orthodontic Treatment

Two-phase treatment is a specialized process that combines tooth straightening and physical, facial changes. The purpose of two-phase treatment is to maximize the opportunity to accomplish the ideal healthy, functional, and aesthetic result that will remain stable throughout your child's life.

Phase I

Phase I treatment is for young patients who don't have all of their adult teeth yet but have a significant issue that is important to address immediately. Phase I treatment involves braces on some teeth for about 12 to 18 months, and often includes an appliance such as an expander. After Phase I treatment, your child will be monitored as they grow into their full adult dentition.

Phase II

The goal of the second phase is to make sure each tooth has an exact location in the mouth where it is in harmony with the lips, cheeks, tongue, and other teeth. When this equilibrium is established, the teeth will function together properly. Phase II usually involves full upper and lower braces.
